The branch was formed in 1964. It
was the idea of Miss Peggy Jones-Newton, a former Oxfordshire police sergeant,
who had contracted MS eight years earlier. After being forced to give up her
police career, she found she cut herself off from society and lost many of
her friends. She wrote to the MS Society to ask if a branch could be formed
in Oxford. The MS Society wrote back saying: “Why don’t you form one
yourself?” She wasted no time. She got
together a committee and when the inaugural meeting was held on Saturday, 24th
October 1964, the branch already had 92 members and a bank balance of £270.
It has never looked back. Today, the branch is run by an
enthusiastic group of members, most of whom have MS.
The annual meeting is held in March when officers for the following year are
elected. The branch has been very successful at fundraising – it has
even managed to send regular amounts to the MS Society towards research
projects – but is always looking for outside groups for additional
support. |
